1. 취지

한국건축가협회는 대한민국 미술전람회의 건축 부문이 폐지됨에 따라 이의 전통과 의의를 계승하여 “대한민국건축대전”을 창설하면서 범 건축인이 참여하는 뜻 있는 국가적 행사가 될 것을 지향하였다. 이에 지난 30여년 동안 국내 건축공모전으로서 최고의 역사를 자랑하는 일반공모전은 빠르게 변화하는 시대의 흐름에 대응하기 위해 2013년도부터 국제 공모전으로 개최하였다. 이제 국내를 넘어 전 세계에 건축문화의 미래를 이끌어갈 신진 건축작가를 발굴하기 위해 자리를 마련하고자한다.

[별첨1] 주제설명

  우리는 서로의 환경이다.

갑작스럽게 들이닥친 코로나19 팬데믹은 우리의 일상과 인간관계를 크게 바꾸어 놓았다. 사람들 간의 접촉이 줄어들었지만 오히려 우리는 일상 속 타인들의 존재를 보다 더 선명하게 의식하게 되었고, 서로가 서로의 생활에 영향을 주고받는 총체적으로 연결된 존재임을 절실하게 깨닫게 되었다. 율라 비스(Eula Biss)는 『면역에 관하여(On Immunity)』에서“우리는 서로의 환경이고, 면역은 공유된 공간(We are each other"s environment. Immunity is a shared space.)”이라고 말한다. 미증유의 전염병 확산에 움츠러든 마음과 시야는 개개인의 삶을 파고들고 있지만, 긍극적으로 팬데믹의 약속된 출구는 이웃들에게 자신의 건강을 빚지는 ‘집단면역’이라는 공동체적 해법밖에 없다는 사실을 되새기게 만든다.

이제 개인의 공간에서 시야를 조금 넓히면 이웃과 동네가 눈에 들어온다. 재택근무와 원격수업을 계기로 활동 범위가 줄어들면서 일상, 가족, 동네, 공동체의 가치를 재발견하게 되었다. 대규모 집합공간의 이용이나 지역 간 이동을 자제하게 되면서 집주변 생활권 내에 있는 편안하고 느슨한 공간들을 더 찾게 되고, 공동체의 가치나 로컬리티(Locality)에 대해서도 다시금 주목하게 된다. 레이 올든버그(Ray Oldenburg)가 구분했던 제1의 장소인 집과 제2의 장소인 일터는 뉴노멀의 새로운 일상 속에서 중첩되거나 경계가 모호해지는 상황을 맞고 있지만, 그가 강조했던 집도 일터도 아닌 제3의 장소, 즉 일상의 행복과 비공식적인 공공생활을 함께 경험할 수 있는 커뮤니티 공간의 가치와 필요성에 대한 주장은 그 어느 때보다 더 설득력 있게 다가온다.

변화에 대한 불확실성과 새로운 기회에 대한 기대가 공존하는 이 시점, 다양한 삶과 인식의 변화들을 담을 수 있는 건축공간과 도시의 모습은 무엇일까? 우리가 직면한 사회적 요구와 시대적 전환 속에서 개인과 가족, 집과 이웃, 지역사회와 도시의 관계는 어떠한 모습으로 새롭게 정의될 수 있을까? 개인을 중심으로 한 개별적이고 자족적인 사적 영역과 타인과 이웃하며 공유하는 공적인 영역은 어떠한 방식으로 서로 엮이거나 양립될 수 있을까? 우리에게 던져진 이 시대의 공동체와 도시건축공간에 대한 다양한 질문들과 고민들에 대해 창의적인 통찰과 해법을 제시하기를 기대해 본다.

The unforeseen breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic transformed our lives and relationships. Although we engage in less communication with others, their presence in our lives even rather feels significant and now we realize that we are all connected to each other in an organic network of human relationship and have a great impact on the life of one another. Eula Biss said in her book, On Immunity, that we are each other’s environment and immunity is a shared space. Individual lives fainthearted at the spread of the unprecedented pandemic are digging into our mindset and vision, but the only way to escape this dreadful nightmare is only through the principle of ‘herd immunity’ practiced by a collective body of the community.

If we broaden our perspective from personal space, we will see our neighbours and community. Remote work and distance learning inside our personal realm make us rediscover the value of our own lives, families, neighbourhood and community. As we avoid gathering in crowded places or moving long distances, we more often visit where we can feel more comfortable and relaxed, also pay more attention to the meaning of locality. Now the boundary between one"s "first" and "second" place, which Ray Oldenburg referred to as home and work, become blurred, but the value and importance of "third" places, as space where we can feel the happiness in everyday life and have specific experience as a member of a community, is being more convincing.

At this moment when there is both uncertainty of change and new opportunities, what should the architectural and urban spaces look like in order to accommodate changes in various lives and perceptions? How could we redefine the relationship between individuals and family, between homes and neighborhood, and between communities and cities while facing the new social needs and the transition of the times? How can we spatially interweave shared public areas with each individual areas, and make them compatible? It is expected to see creative insights and solutions to various questions and concerns about the community and architectural and urban spaces in this era.
