지난 3월 5일 미국 건축가협회(AIA) 이사회에서 현 한국건축단체연합(FIKA) 회장이며, 한국건축가협회(KIA) 한영근 명예회장 께서 오는 AIA 2026 San-Diego Convention (6월 9-12일) 에서 AIA 회장 메달과 명예 회원 자격의 수상자로 선정되셨다는 기쁜 소식을 전하였습니다.

일리야 아자로프, FAIA 2026년 AIA 회장은 이 영예로운 상은 AIA 회장이 외국 건축 협회 회장 또는 국제/지역 전문 협회 회장에게 수여하는 상으로, 선정 기준은 다음과 같다고 전하였습니다.

• 해당 협회의 국가적, 지역적, 국제적 목표 달성에 있어 회장의 중요한 역할을 인정하기 위함입니다.

• AIA와 회장님이 이끄는 외국 전문 협회 간의 상호 유익한 협력과 소통의 역사를 인정하기 위함입니다.

• 변화하는 글로벌 환경 속에서 건축 실무에 대한 이해를 증진하기 위해 AIA와 해당 전문 협회 간에 더욱 심도 있는 대화를 촉진하기 위함입니다.  그리고

• AIA와 수상자의 소속 전문 협회 간의 상호 전문적 존중을 더욱 증진시키기 위함입니다.

이 영예는 한영근 FIKA 대표회장 / KIA 명예회장님의 AIA 내에서의 업적뿐 아니라

전 세계 건축가들의 이해와 교류를 증진하기 위한 노력에 대한 인정으로 수여됩니다.

한영근 FIKA 대표회장 / KIA 명예회장은 2010년 이후 매년 AIA Convention 에 참석해오고 있습니다

한영근은 한국의 건축가이자 한국건축단체연합(FIKA) 대표회장입니다. 또한 홍익대학교 건축과 교수이기도 합니다. 한국 건축계의 주요 인물인 그는 30여 년 동안 헌신적이고 인본주의적이며 다문화적인 건축 비전을 옹호해 왔습니다.

한영근은 현대 건축 분야에서 전 세계, 특히 프랑스와의 지속적인 소통을 구현하는 인물입니다. 서울 홍익대학교에서 초등 교육을 마친 후 프랑스에서 유학하여 2000년 프랑스 정부 건축사 자격증(DPLG)을 취득하며, 그의 건축 경력 전반에 걸쳐 영향을 미친 이중적인 전문적, 문화적 정체성을 확립했습니다.

그의 국제적인 경험은 해외 건축 교육에 대한 폭넓은 지식으로 이어졌습니다. 서울로 돌아온 그는 2006년 아키폴리 건축사무소를 설립하여 도시, 지역, 주택 규모의 프로젝트를 개발하고 있으며, 사회 및 환경 문제를 끊임없이 고려하고 있습니다. 그의 작업은 공익을 위한 책임 있는 건축을 추구하는 데 뿌리를 두고 있습니다.

그는 건축을 인류를 위한 문화적 힘으로 삼아 전 세계를 하나로 묶는 꿈을 가지고 있습니다. 미국, 베트남, 일본, 아제르바이잔, 라틴 아메리카, 아프리카, 프랑스 등 전 세계 건축가들과 관계를 맺고 소통을 촉진함으로써 이 꿈을 실현하고 있습니다.

그는 국제건축가연맹(UIA)의 건축과 교육의 관계에 대한 활동에 적극적으로 참여하고 있습니다. 한국건축가협회(KIA) 회장, UIA 이사, 홍익대학교 교수, 서울시, 광역시, 대통령소속 국가 건축정책위원회 위원 등 다양한 직책과 책임을 통해 모두를 위한 건축이라는 비전을 실천하고 있습니다. 그는 유네스코-UIA 세계 건축 수도 공동 위원회 심사위원이기도 합니다.

그는 UIA의 권위 있는 로버트 매튜 경상(2014),한국 문화체육관광부, 국토교통부장관상(2022), 그리고 최근에는 아제르바이잔 정부 문화훈장(2025), 이집트 건축가협회 대통령 훈장(2025)과 대한민국 공간문화대상  장관상등 수많은 상을 수상했습니다.

한영근은 이러한 귀중한 건축적 대화를 구현하는 인물입니다. 그의 모범적인 경력은 사회, 문화, 그리고 도시의 미래에 대한 건축가의 변함없는 헌신을 보여줍니다. 그는 국가와 학문 분야를 연결하고, 시민들이 진정으로 접근할 수 있는 건축을 창조하는 데 항상 헌신하는 건설자이자 건축가 이기에 수상의 영광을 함께 합니다.

[News] AIA 2026 San-Diego Convention / FIKA Representative President, KIA Honorary President Han Young-keun Selected as Recipient of AIA President's Medal and Honorary Membership

We shared the joyful news that at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Board of Directors meeting on March 5, Mr. Han Young-keun, the current Representative President of the Federation of Institutes of Korea Architects (FIKA) and Honorary President of the Korean Institute of Architects (KIA), was selected as the recipient of the AIA President's Medal and Honorary Membership at the upcoming AIA 2026 San-Diego Convention (June 9-12).

Illya Azaroff, the 2026 AIA President, stated that this prestigious award is presented by the AIA President to the President of a foreign architectural association or an international/regional professional association, and that the selection criteria are as follows:

• To recognize the President's significant role in achieving the national, regional, and international goals of the relevant association.

• To acknowledge the history of mutually beneficial cooperation and communication between the AIA and the foreign professional association led by the President.  

• This is intended to foster deeper dialogue between the AIA and relevant professional associations to enhance understanding of architectural practice amidst a changing global environment.

• It is also intended to further promote mutual professional respect between the AIA and the recipient’s affiliated professional association.

This honor is awarded in recognition of FIKA Representative President Young Keun Han’s achievements within the AIA, as well as his efforts to promote understanding and exchange among architects worldwide.

The AIA invites FIKA Representative President Young Keun Han to the AIA Architecture and Design Conference in San Diego, California.

He is scheduled to receive the AIA President’s Medal and Honorary Membership at the International President’s Forum on Saturday, June 12.

FIKA Representative President Young Keun Han expressed his hope that the AIA Conference would serve as an opportunity to strengthen our mutual commitment to the global architectural community dedicated to securing a more sustainable and equitable future, stating that South Korea and the United States will act together as leaders in the global architectural world.  Chairman Han Young-keun has been attending the AIA Convention every year since 2010.

Han Young-keun is a Korean architect and the Representative President of the Federation of Institutes of Korea Architects (FIKA). He is also a professor of architecture at Hongik University. A leading figure in the Korean architectural community, he has advocated for a dedicated, humanistic, and multicultural architectural vision for over 30 years.

Han Young-keun embodies continuous communication with the world, particularly with France, within the field of contemporary architecture. After completing his primary education at Hongik University in Seoul, he studied abroad in France, where he obtained the French government architect license (DPLG) in 2000, establishing a dual professional and cultural identity that has influenced his entire architectural career.

His international experience led to extensive knowledge of overseas architectural education. Upon returning to Seoul, he founded Archipoli in 2006, where he develops projects on an urban, regional, and residential scale while constantly considering social and environmental issues. His work is rooted in the pursuit of responsible architecture for the public good.

He harbors a dream of uniting the world by making architecture a cultural force for humanity. He is realizing this dream by establishing relationships and fostering communication with architects from around the globe, including the United States, Vietnam, Japan, Azerbaijan, Latin America, Africa, and France.

He actively participates in the International Union of Architects (UIA) activities regarding the relationship between architecture and education. Through various positions and responsibilities—such as President of the Korean Institute of Architects (KIA), Council member of the UIA, Professor at Hongik University, and member of the Presidential Commission on Architecture Policy under the President for the Seoul Metropolitan Government and other metropolitan cities—he is putting his vision of "architecture for all" into practice. He also serves as a juror for the UNESCO-UIA World Architecture Capital Joint Committee.

He has received numerous awards, including the UIA’s prestigious Robert Matthews Prize (2014), the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award (2022), and more recently, the Order of Cultural Merit from the Government of Azerbaijan (2025), the Presidential Order of the Egyptian Association of Architects (2025), and the Minister’s Award at the Korea Good Place Award.

Han Young-keun is a figure who embodies this valuable architectural dialogue.  His exemplary career demonstrates an architect's unwavering commitment to the future of society, culture, and cities. He shares in the honor of this award as a builder and architect who is always dedicated to bridging the nation and academia and creating architecture that is truly accessible to citizens.
